1. Moose
With upwards of 2,500 moose in the state of Colorado, it’s no surprise that animal lovers would come to Grand Lake to see these majestic creatures. It’s reported that the best place to see moose is in Rocky Mountain National Park on the west side, and at dusk and dawn. Additionally, they can be found near wet grass or marshy areas.
When looking for moose, be careful as they can charge you with speeds of 35 miles per hour. Be sure to keep a safe distance of at least 100 feet at all times as you watch these beautiful animals in their natural habitat. If taking children with you, be sure to have them next to you at all times.
2. Mule Deer
Similar to moose, mule deer are most often seen at dusk and dawn. When looking out for mule deer, you may see them running at speeds of 45 miles per hour. You’ll notice them because of their large ears and antlers.
As with moose, keep a distance of at least 100 feet, keep children within arms reach at all times, and remember not to try and feed them. You’ll be able to watch mule deer graze and play as they enjoy their surroundings!
3. Black Bear
Black bears are usually seen between March and November, keeping warm in their dens when food sources become scarce. They feed on insects, various types of grasses, roots, and berries. Additionally, they average 175 to 275 pounds, but they look larger than they are due to their heavy fur coats.
4. Elk
Elk is another popularly sighted animal in Grand Lake, so be sure to keep an eye out for them when traveling Colorado. They range in size and weight but can tip the scales at 1,100 pounds and upwards of 9 feet tall, including their antlers. Antler size is directly related to how much sunlight they’re exposed to, so be sure to look for these animals when you visit Rocky Mountain National Park especially.
5. Bighorn Sheep
Another common animal in Grand Lake, Colorado is Bighorn Sheep. They get their name from their huge, curled horns, sometimes reaching 45 inches in length.
A set of horns can weigh as much as 30 pounds! The size of these horns can add significant weight to these animals, making them weigh upwards of 300 pounds.
