There’s nothing like getting out in the great outdoors to blow off the COVID lockdown cobwebs!

There’s never been a better time to lace up your hiking boots and hit the Colorado hiking trails. Grand Lake, Colorado offers some incredible trails for hikers of all levels.

Let’s take a closer look at our pick of the best hiking trails in Grand Lake, Colorado.

Coyote Valley Trail

Let’s start with one for the whole family. At just one mile long, the Coyote Valley Trail is one of the easiest Grand Lake hiking trails. It’s even wheelchair accessible, meaning everyone can get involved.

For its short length, it sure is packed with goodies! It takes you across the mighty Colorado River, just over 10 miles from its headwaters which are located in the Never Summer Mountains.

This scenic trail also gives you a chance to spot wildlife including elk, moose, otters, deer, and golden eagles soaring up above.

Lake of the Clouds Trail

Ready for something a lot more challenging? Don’t mind some climbing along the way? The Lake of the Clouds trail could be the Grand Lake, Colorado hiking trail for you!

It’s a 14-mile hike that promises peace and solitude. It’s hardly ever busy, which is great in these times of social distancing. Hikers are unanimous in what’s challenging – the boulder fields. Be prepared for some crawling and scrambling.

The reward? Incredible lake and waterfall views in glorious isolation!

Cascade Falls Trail

Cascade Falls Trail is perfect for those looking for a more moderate option, but who would still want a good chance to stretch their legs. This nearly 7-mile trail is a small section of the 3100-mile Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. It stretches along the Rockies from Mexico to Canada.

It offers alpine meadows and waterfalls, as the name suggests. There’s plenty of wildlife on show including elk, moose, and deer. There is also lots of birdlife, with hummingbirds and woodpeckers calling the trail home.

The best of the hiking tips from those who’ve completed it? Make sure you pack plenty of bug spray!

Shadow Mountain Lookout Trail

Do you enjoy hiking trails that combine history and nature? Shadow Mountain Lookout does just that. It’s named after the fire lookout nestled way above the treeline.

The purpose of the lookout was to watch out for fire in the nearby forests. It was actively used until 1968 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places

It’s a strenuous hike of almost 10 miles and begins with a fairly easy walk running parallel with the lake. Look out for osprey that nest nearby. It’s a largely forested trail, with the real views coming from the lookout itself.

From the lookout, you can enjoy panoramic views of Grand Lake, the Never Summer Mountains, and the Shadow Mountain Lake. It may not be the easiest of hiking trails in Grand Lake, but it’s sure like no other.
