In 2019, there were a record number of 7 million fly fishermen in the United States. That sounds like a lot of fishing enthusiasts, right? If you live in Colorado, it’s very common to see these fishermen throughout the area. It never hurts to learn a few more tips to make your fishing experiences even better, so if you’re in the Grand Lake, Colorado region, here are 5 awesome fly fishing tips!

1. Dap a Dry

Dapping may be one of the simplest techniques and is great for fly fishing for beginners. However, it usually comes in handy when there is no room to cast.

So with this method, you want to mimic an egg-laying insect above the water. And you do this by putting the fly on the surface of the water and allowing it to drift a few inches. Then, pick it up, set it back down, and repeat.

2. Basic Fly Cast

When learning how to go fly fishing, it’s important to learn a basic fly cast, which will be the foundation for all of your casts.

To do this, you will start by tipping your rod down and laying your line in front of you on the water. Then, quickly move your rod tip behind you.

Next, you’ll wait until the line stretches behind you, then cast it in front of you for the finishing step.

3. Roll Cast

A roll cast is another great option to add to your arsenal. This helps in tight places such as tree lines.

In order to do this, jerk your rod tip upwards and allow the line to hang down. Your line should make a “D” shape next to the rod, and once you see the “D,” you can then cast your line.

4. Deep Water

A great tip for lake trout fly fishing is to fish in the deep water pools, as larger trout prefer these areas. They enjoy deeper pools for the baitfish and larva prey that frequent these areas.

However, you’ll need a heavier fly than usual so it can drift to the bottom, so you want a fair amount of weight for your fly to skip along the riverbed. To do this, you’ll want to adjust the weight of your fly to get the perfect skip.

5. Trout Diet

If you want to be a good fisherman, you’ll want to know what your target fish are eating and what their diet usually consists of. Since trout usually eat subsurface insects, you’ll want your fly to resemble these nymphs

And if you’re not familiar with the area’s bug population, you can ask around for advice. You can also go to the local bait shop and get a hatch chart of the in-season insects.
